Il torneo del campionato PGA fu giocato per la prima volta nel 1916, rendendolo il terzo più antico delle major maschili professionisti. Questo è l'unico dei quattro major, tuttavia, a cambiare il suo formato di punteggio a metà della sua storia: nei suoi primi anni, questo maggiore era il gioco match, ma negli anni '50 è passato al gioco dell'ictus.
